The Leo Baeck Institute’s Academic Research Group (WAG) is an association of German historians founded in 1989 with the aim of promoting research into and the presentation of German-Jewish history.
It is an institution of the International Leo Baeck Institute (LBI), which—with its centers in Jerusalem, London, and New York—was founded in 1955 as a scholarly institution by leading representatives of Jews expelled from Germany. Thus, the initiative to establish the WAG also came from the Leo Baeck Institute, which decided to intensify its work in Germany. After the WAG was established, it made independent decisions regarding the content and organization of its work, as well as the admission of new members.
